Steel Curtain at Kennywood is closed for 2024 Season

Kennywood (West Mifflin, PA) recently announced that their flagship attraction, Steel Curtain, will not be available for the upcoming season. In a video statement, Ricky Spicuzza, the assistant general manager, explained that the coaster will undergo extensive modifications to enhance its reliability and lifespan. While understanding the disappointment of fans who were eagerly anticipating the Steel Curtain experience, Spicuzza assured them that the park’s team shares their frustration.

To increase ride reliability and longevity, the Steel Curtain will undergo an extensive modification project this year. The park has worked with third-party engineers and the ride’s manufacturer to determine a long-term solution that will allow the ride to run without interruption. The coaster will be closed for the entirety of the season as we work on this project.

The decision to temporarily close the Steel Curtain was made after collaborating with external engineers and the ride’s manufacturer to find a permanent solution. The objective is to ensure that the coaster can operate smoothly without any interruptions. This roller coaster, which was awarded the title of Best New Roller Coaster in 2019, offers an exhilarating experience with its impressive height of 220 feet, 4,000 feet of track, and nine inversions at speeds of up to 76 mph.

Although the absence of the Steel Curtain will be felt this season, Kennywood has prepared other thrilling attractions for visitors to enjoy. The Turtle, a beloved ride that was closed in 2023, will be making a comeback. Additionally, the bumper cars have been transformed into a new ride called Potato Smash, featuring decorative elements like faux fries, cheese sauce, and a giant fork. Furthermore, starting in July, the park will introduce Celebrate Pittsburgh, a special event that will highlight the city’s local arts, culture, sports, and beer. Kennywood will open on weekends until May 17, when it will fully open for the 2024 season on May 23.
